Was data science proportionally more affected than software engineering at Meta and Google?
How were data scientists affected in the last round of layoffs (Q4 2022) at Google and Meta?
Not very much, according to WARN data.
In our analysis of Meta WARN data from the 2022 Q4 layoffs we found only 16 data science employees laid off of 2746 total in California (which represent about 20% of the total layoff of 11,000 people in Q42022).
Similarly, Google WARN data (which represents about 30% of the total global layoffs) only had 11 data science employees from 2023 Q1 layoffs, compared with over 1200 software engineers.
Even if we expand the title “data scientist” look for “Analyst” OR “data” in titles, we only find 120 employees laid off.
Why might this be the case? Theories welcome!
